Congratulations to the 2025 AFT Local 1904 Scholarship Recipients!

The AFT Local 1904 is very pleased to have awarded thirteen scholarships in 2025! Recipients were acknowledged virtually (via Zoom) at our Scholarship Award Celebration on Friday, April 25th, 2025.

Recipients are all undergraduate students in various majors, in good academic standing, with strong scholastic aspirations, and who have demonstrated that they would substantively benefit from the support of the scholarship as a resource. 

Our heartfelt thanks to members of the 2025 Scholarship Committee: Catherine Baird, Keitha DeJongeLisa GarrityKaren Mingo-Campbell, and--with SPECIAL THANKS--Carmen Reyes-Cuevas, who is retiring from the University this year, and who has contributed many years of service to this Committee. Also, sincere thanks to: All those who provided recipients letters of recommendation for our students; Local Office Manager, Deb Corasio, for helping to manage the scholarship applications; and the Officers of the Local 1904for supporting the Scholarship Committee's award recommendations. 

The BKMBUW/Yovnello/Nunn/BCMSU Scholarship Fund was originally established in 1997. The Scholarship currently honors Catherine A. Becker, James P. Keenen III, Joseph T. Moore, Kenneth H. Brook, Anita E. Uhiaand Connie Waller, all former faculty and active union members, as well as Nicholas C. Yovnello and Ellen Kearns Nunn, all of whom were deeply committed to the principles of collective bargaining and to helping our students who demonstrate a significant economic need. The Nunn award is reserved specifically for students who are single parents. The Bloomfield College of Montclair State University (BCMSU), based upon a generous 2023 gift from the BCMSU labor community to the AFT Local 1904's scholarship fund, is reserved specifically for a BCMSU student who meets certain specific criteria.

Officers of the AFT Local 1904 at "Kill the Cuts" Rally (Newark, NJ)

On Tuesday, April 8th, Officers of the AFT Local 1904, together in solidarity with AFT Local 6025 (Adjuncts), AFTNJ, CNJSCL (Council), and national AFT leadership, attended the Kill the Cuts rally in Newark, NJ. This was a national day of action, on which labor communities across the United States stood up and demanded no cuts to education or to life-saving research.

AFT Local 1904 President Laura Field attends Senator Britnee Timberlake's 6th Annual Community Empowerment Awards Reception

AFT Local 1904 President Laura Field attended Senator Britnee Timberlake's 6th annual Community Empowerment Awards Reception at The Appian Way on Friday, March 28th. The event honored "outstanding leaders and changemakers who embody the spirit of service, advocacy, and community empowerment."

AFT Local 1904 Officers at The National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions

Several AFT Local 1904 officers and delegates attended the annual conference of The National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions. The conference took place in New York City on March 23th, 24th, and 25th. The theme of the conference was "Defense of Higher Education and Collective Bargaining." The keynote presentation, "Unity in Defense of Higher Education and Collective Bargaining," featured Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers, and Lynn Pasquerella, President, American Association of Colleges and Universities. Officers attended panels on topics such as how AI is changing the bargaining landscape, antiracism and social justice issues as negotiable subjects, working with labor management committees, and many others.
