Union Prevails in matter regarding Career Development and Tuition Reimbursement Funds

The Union won a victory and the University is being required to live up to its obligation to fully fund the Career Development and Tuition Reimbursement Programs.

The arbitrator, Scott Buchheit, who heared the Union's case against the University regarding this matter, found that the University did not fulfill its contractual obligation to fund these programs at the level stipulated in our contract and as allocated by the State.

As a result, the Arbitrator determined that the University must reconvene the Career Development Committee that was constituted in 2009 and provide it with the full $45,859.36 to be awarded by the committee.

In order to implement the Arbitrator's judgment, the Local will negotiate with the University with regard to the procedures to be put in place to make sure that this happens, and that the funds for the 2010 Fiscal year are also awarded.

MSUFT Local 1904 would like to acknowledge that if the matter had not been pursued by the previous officers and our case had not been presented so expertly by College Council Staff Representative, Bennett Muraskin, and the Local's grievance consultant, Barbara Hoerner, this outcome would have been possible.

And a special thanks to Rich Wolfson, Treasurer of MSUFT Local 1904, raising this issue in the first place, and for his follow-through and persistence. We also thank Dierdre Glenn Paul, former president of MSUFT Local 1904, for it was under her tenure that this process began.
